Pixel Values and MIN/MAX

Every image is made up of tons of tiny pixels. Each of these pixels has a value, its pixel value. The pixel values show how much light came through. the ones will the highest pixel value are the brightest. The ones with the lowest pixel values are the darkest. Sometimes, though, two pixels will look the same color, but have different pixel values. This is because of the min and max. When you process an image, you can adjust the min and max of it. This changes how much light you can see in the image.

By changing the min and max in some images, we noticed these things:
  • pixels below the min will be dark (black)
  • pixels above the max will be bright (white)
  • pixels in between will be shades of gray

Here are some images that have had their MIN/MAX changed.

Venus AFTER Min and Max Were Changed

The original image had a min of 0 and a max of 255. I changed it so the min was 100 and the max was 200. Changing the max made the entire image brighter, and changing the min made a lot of it a little darker.
